No, I've never mined for gems. Always thought it would be fun. I've looked up places in my area but that's as far as I got.

At the age of 5..My Gdma had a jewelry drawer in the center of her chest of drawers..that was my hidden treasure chest! She let me play with all of the most wonderful SPARKLIES I could ever dream of..every color of the rainbow..and POP BEADS..Oh My.! They were all a pastel color...Ahhhh.memories
I went to jewelry repair school. And fixed some of the memories for others. This is some of the love story I have of jewelry. I know there are many like me,who have the love of pretty SPARKLIES..WE ROCK !

My grandma, she had dresser drawers full and always gave my sister and I some to play with. I'm sure it was all costume jewelry as she was very thrifty.I never got any of it when she passed. I bet it's still there. My uncle still lives in that house. I bet he didn't throw anything away.

@OtherSideOfTheTracks you got me with the dentist treasure chest - I'd totally forgotten about that! My dentist did that, too! And you jogged my memory of those little girl jewelry boxes with the ballerina that spun and music played when the box was opened. Mine played Fur Elise. You may not know or remember the title, but when you hear it, it brings you back. Thanks for the great reminder!

Yes!!! Fur Elise! That's it! I still have so many of my old childhood jewelry boxes. I will look inside them every few years. I get to see what I thought were "treasures" from my child's eye. I have several rocks, play coin money, Vacation Bible School button, rabbit's foot, cracker jack toys, fake watch, and of course plastic rings.Sea_Hag wrote: ↑3 years ago@OtherSideOfTheTracks you got me with the dentist treasure chest - I'd totally forgotten about that! I remember when we went somewhere and there were bubble gum machines and toy machines I would pray I would get the "ring" inside the plastic bubble it came in. I don't remember getting one. I remember once I got a plastic toy soldier and I was so mad! LOL

I had forgotten all about the dentist's treasure chest. We were so happy to pick a prize.OtherSideOfTheTracks wrote: ↑3 years agoMine started because it was important to give daughters pearls throughout their childhood for achievements like graduation or birthdays. It started with getting a tiny pearl bracelet as a baby for baby pictures. Then another bracelet and then necklaces on a birthday, Easter and so on. I was taught how important it was to care for them and how to wear them. We could only wear them to important events as well - never to be played with. So, then I wanted jewelry to play with. My mom would buy me "toy" jewelry (under a dollar!) and I would dress up and wear jewelry. You know the plastic jewelry that came in a one-sided cardboard sleeve at the grocery store.
When we would go to the dentist as a small child, my dentist would bring out a big tray of toy rings as a reward for being good! OMG it was so exciting and he would allow me to pick one. One trip to the dentist for my brother, I was sitting in the chair waiting and bored so the nurse brought out a tray of rings to pick out while I waited for my brother and I tried on every ring, twice and three times, big fake diamonds, emeralds, sapphires etc. all plastic and adjustable. I was having a hard time deciding because I loved them all. Our dentist noticed and laughed and asked me to pick out all my favorites and he gave them to me.
So I started collecting toy jewelry, musical jewelry boxes with ballerinas etc. and moved on to the good stuff as an adult.

I have loved jewelry for as long as I can remember! When I was too young to go to school, my mom would take me to the grocery store with her first thing in the morning. At the checkout counter, there were birthstone rings for children. I was sad when I saw the stone for November! I remember wishing I had been born in July or September so those could have been my birthstones! (Also, I remember Liddle Kiddles! I had one named Biff Biddles, and I loved the way it smelled! LOL!). Thanks for asking this fun question!

WOW, I wish our dentist had given out jewelry! Ironically, our dentist gave us candy!

. In about the sixth grade (in the early 60's I believe it was), my now deceased mother began selling Sarah Coventry Jewelry. I can't tell you how many home parties I went to. So I lovingly tease that it's her fault for my love of jewelry. Bangles are my favorite jewelry item.
