Auto max bid

I just started using it a few days ago and cannot win anything, somehow someone bidding sees my max bid and bids $1 higher no matter what number so put in. I just can't win on this. I have Max bids now on a few dozen items let's see how many actually win. I even typed in an extra number twice in error making my bid 3 digits and still someone bid higher,it was a way over bid.The items were not worth $300-500.
