Tax

Post by HowRevelationary » 3 years ago

Simple question: the shirt I purchased from shoplc this morning is NOT taxable in the state where I reside, nor are the shipping charges associated with said shirt; so why was $.40 tax included on my invoice? What am I missing? Is it some sort of exit tax for TX?

How revolutionary: Tennessee never had tax either on state tax. If that is what you mean. We still don’t pay state tax but in October 2019 I believe it federal law on anything ordered each state would start taxing. Hope that made sense. ☹️

Hi! HowRevolutinary
I think Harlequin may be "right"...some where in the news?...awhile ago?
The government "caught up " with companies that weren't charging tax
I.e. the on- line businesses
and "changed the rules"
I'm surprised, too, on things you wouldn't think to be taxed.
And, that's how it goes!

Why wouldn't it be taxed?

My state has no sale tax and shop lc does not charge me tax, I would call customer service and tell the your state has no tax, they will refund you.

HowRevelationary:
That may be so about your state.
But Texas has a 6.25% Sales/use tax...
It's as if you went into a store there and
Bought that shirt
...you'd be charged sales tax.
Think that's why!!

.
@Jace

The tax is not on the state where the sale originated, but for the destination (Buyer's) state. If the state the buyer lives in there should not be any tax on the purchase price. Tax on shipping/processing may be another matter.
