Auction order canceled because not in inventory?

The AAA Tanzanite Ring I won at auction was invoiced, my account debited and then the order was canceled due to lack of inventory.
Has this happen to anyone else? Yes, I was able to win the ring again, but at much more substantial amount than before, of which I am displeased about.
I don't understand. Could someone please explain to me how am item can be in inventory to be sold to me yet not available after it is sold?

I already have several of these 18", diamond cut chains, so I hope it's not quality issues!

If that was at play here then why do we get sent things with missing stones, bad settings, cracked stones, etc. etc. etc?
